On September 10th, Geography had a successful Open House to welcome the community to our newly renovated building and courtyard. During the summer of 2013, UBC initiated a large renovations project to fix long standing maintenance issues in the Geography Building. These renovations gave the department an opportunity to renovate existing spaces into four new rooms. Our courtyard was renewed as a part of a larger UBC beautification project. The new Biogeomorphology Experimental Laboratory in Ponderosa Commons, the outcome of four CFI grants amounting to approximately $3 million, also had its grand opening earlier this year. The Open House was an opportunity for the department to showcase the new rooms, the renewed courtyard, and give the community an opportunity to tour the BGMX Laboratory.
In addition to the reception, each room also held exhibits of the smaller communities that existed within the greater Geography community; the Geography Students’ Association, the Geography Graduate Association, the Geographic Information Centre, and people from the Urban Studies Program greeted and mingled with over 200 guests during the course of the Open House. The night ended with a concert from the visiting 20 piece jazz band from the University of Innsbruck.Thank you to everyone who came to our Open House!
