Join us this summer for GEOS 309 Field Camp

Come get your hands dirty with us this summer during Geog 309 Field Camp, hosted at the state-of-the-art Teck Geological Field Station in the Okanagan Valley! This immersive experience provides the opportunity to build field and technical geographical science skills in a range of landscapes, from stream beds to grassland savannah.

Students will explore practical skills such as surveying and mapping, field sampling, instrumentation, electronic data acquisition, and the design and implementation of field projects. Field Camp provides experiential learning to students enroled in Environmental degrees and is accredited for Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC) certification.

The UBC Teck Geological Field Station is located in beautiful Oliver, BC, on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Syilx peoples. This 3 credit field course runs for 11 days from May 26 to June 5th 2024.

Co-instructor Nina Hewitt describes the field camp:

“This Capstone experience is an 11-day immersion in a classic interior grassland environment, and a landscape where surface geology is exposed and easily studied. It is a chance to try out fieldwork techniques and hang with peers and instructors. Students come away with social connections they retain – evenings out with friends they previously sat across the class from. Oh, and the food, prepared by Azorean catering, is a regular highlight!”

GEOS 309 Field Camp details:

3 credit immersive 11-day field course from May 25th-June 4th
- Additionally there will be a preliminary zoom session on May 13th and some pre field prep work online and written follow-up
Open to students who have completed their 2nd year by April 2024 and who meet the pre-requisites (see calendar)
Students from Geographical Sciences, Environment & Sustainability, Environmental Science, Forestry and Land and Food Systems are all eligible!
Masters students may register if there are spaces available

Course fee: $1095 (includes accommodation, meals and transportation)
- This fee is in addition to any registration fees due to the university. It also includes the cost of cultural training and research sensitivity training with the Nk’mip Desert Cultural Centre of the Osoyoos Indian Band.
