The GSA’s two weeks of career-related workshops, panels, and networking events held from February 5-15 was a great success! The events brought together over 120 attendees, industry partners, and volunteers.
The first week featured three career-building workshops: a Resume, Cover Letter, and LinkedIn workshop; an Interview Tips Workshop; and a Public Speaking and Networking Workshop. These workshops helped participants feel more comfortable entering the workforce, giving them vital skills within professional settings.
The second week revealed an incredible Alumni Panel and Networking Night featuring four UBC Geography alumni—Daniel Lai, Celina Ruhland, Chitinthi Tembo, and Kyle Wlodarczyk—working in vastly different and exciting fields. This panel gave students unique insights into where their degree could take them and the chance to make valuable connections. As a student reflected, “I wish I had this at the beginning of my degree,” and “I loved having the chance to hear from geography alums about their experiences!”
The GSA’s Career Weeks culminated in the final event, the Industry Networking Night, which allowed students to hear from an inspiring Young Professional Panel and network with industry professionals from ESRI Canada, YVR Airport, the Stanley Park Ecological Society, UBC SCARP, and more.
We are incredibly grateful to the alumni, industry professionals, and speakers for making these Career Weeks possible, and to the hardworking and committed team of GSA volunteers who put it into action. We also extend our gratitude to the UBC Geography Department for their continuing support of the GSA. It was a pleasure to see so many enthusiastic students actively engaging in the events designed to enhance career readiness and exploration.
Inspired by this success, the GSA looks forward to hosting more career events in the future!
