Meet the 2015-16 GSA Executives

President, Evelyn W. Chan

Hello! My name is Evelyn and I am a 4th years Geography – Environment and Sustainability student. Just like many of the other GSA Execs, I was also born and raised in Vancouver! Even though I have a strong interest in urban geography and GIS, I am also really passionate about fine arts, public health, mental health. As I am entering my final year of studying at UBC, one of my main goals as the President of the GSA is to promote positive mental health and well being not only within the Geography Community. Another goal that I have over the course of the school year is to provide more networking events and strength finders/career building workshops for undergrads within our department. I hope that through these open sessions students will really get the chance to gain a set of skills to allow them to feel prepared to graduate.

VP-Academic, Matthew Chung

matthew_chung
I’m Matthew and I’m a fourth year human geography major with a keen interest in urban and migration geography, as well as the geography of Asia. Over the last two years that I’ve spent editing Trail Six, I’ve been introduced to all the amazing people who form the GSA family, which has motivated me to become a more active member of the community. When not working (or procrastinating), I like to take long walks, play with gadgets, ogle at interesting maps, and look at cat pictures online!

VP-Administration, Stella Zhou

stella_z
Hello my name is Stella!! I am a fourth year student in Environment and Sustainability. I truly enjoy travelling, yet deep inside my heart I’m 100% Vancouverite My biggest dream is to explore all the different cultures and visit as many countries as possible in my lifetime. Hopefully I can use Geography to conquer the world one day!! Anyway, feel free to chat with me when you see me around, I love having random conversations with people.

VP-Communications, Amy Luo

amy_luo

My name is Amy and I’m a 6th year (you read that correctly… 6th….) Human Geography major. I’m not that true to my major in the sense that my expertise lies in all things marketing – social media, graphic design, communications – I am often mistaken for a Sauder student…. But I love environmental sustainability, specifically waste reduction. My friends often make fun of me for always having tupperware on hand. I play really competitive Ultimate Frisbee (Team Canada level) and in my spare time you can find me cycling the city in Birkenstocks or playing with my pet bunny.

VP-External: Emily Huang

emily_huang_gsa
Hi I’m Emily and I will be your VP-External this year! I enjoy coffee shop hopping and going for long walks. If you see a girl in class eating bananas and oranges every day, that’s probably me. Come talk to me if you’re interested in field trips, the WDCAG conference, Bad Latitude sports team, and various UBC activities!

VP-Finance, Andrew Wheaton

andrew_wheaton
My name is Andrew Wheaton, I’m 22 years old and have 1 more year left at UBC. I was raised in Edmonton, Alberta but have spent the last 8 years in BC. I’m doing a Major in Environment and Sustainability, and also have a Minor in Economics. If I’m not busying studying around the Geography building, I’ll be skiing at Whistler, longboarding around Stanley Park, or spending time with friends. About 3 years ago after returning from a seawall longboard cruise, I came home to find a lost Peach-Faced Lovebird on my porch that I took under my wing and named Skittles!

VP-Graduation, Angela Cho

angela_cho
Born and raised in Vancouver, Angela is a 3rd-year Sociology and Geography double major who is excited to be your VP Grad for this year. Angela has always been passionate about community engagement, and looks forward to serving the Geography community. One of Angela’s most memorable experiences is her backpacking trip through the Canadian Rockies. Angela’s go-to breakfast is overnight oats, and she loves to sing (although most likely off-tune) in the shower. When she’s not on campus, you can find Angela wandering around the beautiful neighbourhoods of East Vancouver. Some of her interests include gardening, social justice, and watching mouth-watering cooking videos on Youtube.

VP-Social, Caitlin Chan

caitlin_chan

Caitlin Chan is a second-going-on-to-third year Human Geography major and Creative Writing minor. She like travelling, certain 90’s things, the colour blue, and red lipstick. Secret talents include cutting bangs perfectly at eyebrow length and sneezing at inopportune times.

VP-Social: Damini Jain

damini_jain
Damini was born in India and have lived in Bangkok, Singapore, Amsterdam and now Vancouver, having lived in such a diverse range of countries is one of the factors that sparked her curiosity in geography. Her other interests include travelling, swimming, eating and Game of Thrones. As Co-VP Social, she wants to bring a more collaborative, engaging and enjoyable atmosphere, which can be a platform for various academic and social activities. Moreover, she would like to help develop community, and create and introduce new and interesting activities to promote a sense of belonging in all geography students.

VP-Sustainability, Jessica Broomfield

jessica_broomfield

I was born in Canada but have spent most of my life growing up everywhere else so don’t ask me where I call home or where I’m from because I am just as clueless as you. I love to travel, hike and scuba dive but mostly I love trying new experiences, going to new places and being outdoors. I’m one of the biggest foodies ever and have a hard time deciding on what my favourite cuisine is because honestly there is not one I dislike. As VP sustainability this year I can’t wait to see sustainability among the department grow, become increasingly more connected and become a fundamental aspect of this department. I’m excited to plan some awesome sustainability centred events and workshops and of course to call the GeoGarden my baby.
