Professor Geraldine Pratt has been named as Head of the Department of Geography, commencing July 1st 2019.

Prof. Pratt is the Canada Research Chair in Transnationalism and Precarious Labour. Her research has focused on gender, care, immigration and labour, often undertaking research in collaboration with migrant organizations.

She was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Oslo, and was named the 2018/19 recipient of UBC’s premier award for research, the Jacob Biely Research Prize.

Of her new appointment, Prof. Pratt said “I feel fortunate to take on this job in a department with such a talented and dedicated staff, a history of excellent leadership, a culture of collegiality among faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, and a strong record of innovative undergraduate teaching and research excellence.  I take none of this for granted and look forward to working with my colleagues during the next three years to support what we already do so well, and to foster new collaborations among us and beyond.”

Prof. Pratt succeeds Prof. Marwan Hassan, who has led the department since 2012.
