We strongly condemn the recent violent attack on the Asian community in Atlanta, Georgia, and the continuing rise of racial violence against Asian communities.
The increase in hate crimes and incidents against Asian Canadian, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities during the COVID-19 pandemic is intimately connected to systemic, historical and state-sanctioned discrimination against Asian people in the United States and Canada.
We support and stand in solidarity with the Asian community at UBC. We recommit to being actively anti-racist in our work as geographers, and to educating for justice.
Resources on combating anti-Asian violence have been compiled by the UBC Department of Asian Studies, and the Centre for Japanese Research. The journal Society + Space has also curated a forum on anti-Asian violence, which gathers the perspectives of Asian-American scholars and organizers. We strongly encourage our community to read and engage with this work.
