Pursuing a PhD degree

Research Area: Biodiversity, Ecology, Politics | Gender, Race, Class | Power, Colonialism, Justice

Supervisor: Juanita Sundberg

Degrees: BA in Biology (Top of the class distinction), UNAM (2015), M.Sc. Biological Sciences (Ecology, degree with honors), UNAM (2018).

Research Statement: My doctoral research studies the entanglements between environmental protection efforts and racial segregation in Mexico. I use the case study of a small beach town in the Riviera Maya to understand the (re)production of the complex racial formations in Mexico and Latin America and their relationship with environmental protection efforts. My study explores how the connection between the production of environmental and racialized subjects plays a significant role in facilitating segregation, dispossession, and extractivism. I use the frameworks of internal colonialism and Blanquitud, to understand the multilayered forms of racialization and segregation that take place in Latin American societies.
