Research Statement:
At the University of British Columbia, I combine my knowledge of engineering with my love for nature to explore how rivers react to changes in the environment. Specifically, I look at rivers in areas called alluvial fans. Imagine a fast-flowing stream rushing down a mountain and then suddenly spreading out like a fan when it hits a flat area – that’s an alluvial fan. These places are tricky to study because they’re always changing. They can also be dangerous spots due to events like sudden changes in the river’s course, or the river’s banks eroding away. By using experimental models and advanced image processing, I monitor these changes closely. My goal is to help people better understand the risks in these areas and develop ways to keep places and people safe.
