Research Statement: My research focuses on studying territories of contention in Latin America. Across the region, many rural communities reject mining and other extractive projects in the name of the “defence of territory”, despite the violent repression that often ensues. Drawing from an interdisciplinary literature and engaged fieldwork, I investigate how this dynamic of protest and repression helps understand state formation, global capitalism and colonialism in the 21st century.
