To assist students with course planning, the UBC Geography Students’ Association (GSA), in collaboration with UBC Geography, has launched a video series highlighting student perspectives on courses offered within the Department of Geography.
“We wanted to create something to help our peers navigate the range of academic pathways available to students within the department, not just through course descriptions, but through the voices of those who have engaged meaningfully with courses and have benefited from them,” says Maia Rankine-Griffith, President (2024/25) of the GSA. Through interviews with current students and recent graduates, the series offers an inside look at courses available in both BA and BSc streams. Viewers can expect insight into:
- The scope and focus of UBC Geography courses;
- What typical class sessions and assignments look like; and
- Real-world applications and connections beyond the classroom.
“The idea for the Student Stories project came about through the combination of online resources providing limited detail about courses, and through conversations with peers about courses they have taken.” Says Amanda Quail, the GSA’s VP Communications (2024/25). “This has been a year-long project, from selecting the courses to highlight with the Department’s support, filming and editing, and finally releasing these videos publicly.”
The full series is now available on the GSA’s Instagram page @ubcgsa and the UBC Geography YouTube channel.
